Sage {Salvia officinalis} is actually related to the mint family perennial, and is native to the Balkans & Mediterranean regions. Sage will have green grayish leaves with a subtle softness to them. I think one of the most popular culinary claims to sage is Thanksgiving stuffing! {just my opinion} Sage is not only a wonderful addition to your herb pantry to cook with, it also has wonderful medicinal & therapeutic properties! Some Therapeutic Uses: Helps with indigestion, lack of appetite, oral inflammation, perspiration, sore throat. It has also been known to help with Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, cancer, fever, gingivitis, inflammation, sores, night sweats, menstrual pain and canker sores.. just to name a few! The plants tannins are astringent and antiseptic, they can play an important part in preventing gingivitis! You could try to make a Sage Tea! It is a mood elevator, and helps with overall mental performance! Here is what you will need:
Bring water almost, but not quite, to a boil. Steep for 10-15 minutes for full effects of the sage, then strain. If desired, add lemon, honey, or cinnamon. Pour over ice or drink hot. Its yummy to try iced for the summer! :)
